Fish have different personalities which change as they experience life’s highs and lows.

accOrding to British biologists.

Researchers identified different“personalities” in their fish by observing the boldness or

shyness of individuals, according to The Nature.Like people, some fish are very confident in the

face of novelty(新奇事物)or conflict;while others are silent and feaml.

The scientists selected particularly bold and shy rainbow trout, and tested whether thev

changed their outlook depending on what life threw at them. They arranged some fish to fight

and others to watch to see how both the participants and observers responded to victories and

defeats.Winning or losing a fight,or even watching fellow fish overcome the difficuhies influenced

the future behavior of the creatures studied in the lab.

The researchers made fish compete with much larger or smaller opponents.to ensure that

they would win or lose their fights. These bold fish that won their fights tended to be even

bolder when later presented with a novel food item;losing their fight caused them to be much

more cautious.

Fish also learn by watching others.Bold fish watching a shy fish exploring a mystery object

were much more nervous when later given a novelty item for themselves.

Predictably, shy fish that won a fight also gained more confidence, but surprisingly, shy fish

that lost their fights also grew bolder when exploring strange new food,Sneddon said, adding

that this could be due to what she calls a“desperado effect”(亡命徒效应).

The new research suggests that animals can gradually adapt their personalities. The results

echo the effects that life experience can have on human.

书面表达(满分25分):

One possible version:

Hi Mark,

Hope all is well. I’d like to take this opportunity to share my plan with you on our Cross Cultural Communication Project.

To be practical, we can have four aspects in our communication. First, a brief self introduction is needed. Then, as students in both sides are interested in foreign students’ life, food culture sharing will surely be the most popular. In addition, each one is expected to describe the education that they are having in their own countries. Last but not least, exchange of skills for language study may be of great value to both sides.

That’s all. I’m open to your suggestions and expecting your plan. Only with joined efforts can the project be a great success. (115 words)

Text 4

W: I really don’t like the way Ted controls the conversation all the time. If he is going to be at the Christmas party, I won’t come.

M: I’m sorry you feel that way. But my mother insists that he come.

M: I’ve heard the weather here is ideal. It’s like spring all the year round.#p#分页标题#e#

W: That’s correct. We have four seasons of spring.

W: Well, there are some restaurants in the market here.

M: Are they cheap? I don’t have a lot of money with me, so …

W: You know, they’re like fast-food places.

M: Hmm, I don’t really want fast food today. Uh, what about my neighborhood? There’re some cheap restaurants there.

W: But, uh, your neighborhood is 30 minutes from here by bus. And I’m really hungry. It’s 2:30, you know.

M: Right, so, how about, um … Oh, I know! There’s a little French restaurant near here. It’s good and it’s not expensive. It’s about 15 minutes from here.

W: OK. Let’s go there.

W: What’s the matter? You look upset.

M: I’m really annoyed with Sophie. You know I invited her to come to our house and spend the night.

W: Yes, I remember. And?

M: She said she wanted to come and she’d bring some videos. But she called an hour ago and said she couldn’t come.

W: Why?

M: She said her parents were going out, so she had to baby-sit her little brother.

W: These things happen. I’m sure it’s not her fault. Did she say she was sorry?

M: Yes, she did. But I got annoyed with her because she didn’t sound very sorry. If she’d called this morning, I could have invited someone else. Or I could have gone to the country with Erin.

Text 8

W: OK, so what are we going to see today? There’s so much I want to do and we’ve only got two days left of our honeymoon!

M: Yeah, we’ve already been here five days and we still haven’t been up the Eiffel Tower! First, I’d like to visit the Arc de Triomphe today. I’ve seen so many pictures of it. Now I want to see it in person.

W: Yeah, me too. And then we can see the art museum, the Louvre. I’d like to spend a few hours in there.

M: Sure, but that won’t leave much time for Montmartre. We can see the famous church, the Sacre-Couer there.

W: OK, but I don’t think we’ll have time for that today. Let’s do that tomorrow. We’ve got time to climb up the Eiffel Tower, though. Why don’t we go there after the Louvre?

M: Sure, OK.

M: Mrs. Clark, I want to ask you something about application for a job. Can I send an e-mail instead of a cover letter with my application?

W: Yes, of course. But there are certain rules you have to follow. You should always open with a greeting. Make sure you add your signature at the end.

M: What about length? I hate it when I get a long e-mail.

W: I think most of us feel like you, John. It’s good to stick to one page — no more than a letter-sized page if printed out. You should use paragraphs as well.#p#分页标题#e#

M: Can I depend on the computer to do the spell-check and grammar-check?

W: No, not really because, as you know, that feature is not always available on the e-mail programs, so make sure you check and edit it yourself. Remember also that it’s OK to add smiley faces when e-mailing friends and family, but never in a business e-mail. It’s time for class, let’s talk after class.

Text 10

M: Well, Monica, I’m sure you’ll enjoy working here. I’m the librarian. We’re open from nine in the morning until eight in the evening but you’re not expected to be here all that time. You start working at a quarter to nine and finish at a quarter past five, OK?

Now, students aren’t allowed to bring large bags into the library. But staff can bring their bags in and leave them in the office. You have an hour for lunch. But I don’t like staff eating in the library. Of course you can have a cup of coffee there while you’re working. If you bring sandwiches for lunch, there’s a common room downstairs where you can eat them. If you want to buy lunch, I’d recommend the dining room upstairs. There are cafés in the town centre but it’s a bit of rush to get there and back in an hour though they’re cheap. OK. Any questions?
