About l,500 years ago the Japanese imported many aspects of Chinese culture :the writing system, political institutions, and perhaps the most important, Buddhism. Buddhist priests were expected to eat only vegetables, and tofu, made from the soybean, was a very important food in their diet. When Buddhism was introduced from China, tofu was also brought to Japan.#p#分页标题#e#

Tofu developed in different ways in China and Japan. While the Chinese often changed the

taste of tofu by mixing it with strongly - flavored vegetables or meat, the Japanese preferred to eat it using only a simple sauce. Even now, traditional Japanese cooking preserves the original delicacy of tofu, though the way it is served may change from season to season. In summer, for example, it is simply served cold, while in winter it is often eaten as part of a hot dish.

The soybean was introduced to the West in the 18th century, but little interest was taken in it. Only scientists recognized its high food value.During the Second World War, when meat was in short supply, the US government encouraged the American people to eat soybean products. However, they never became very popular and, after the war, interest in them dropped off as the supply of meat became plentiful again.

In recent years, people in the West have become increasingly aware of the dangers of eating too much animal fat, and as a result, they have turned more and more to soybean products. This is mainly because the soybean provides almost the same food value as meat, and in addition it is a lot more healthful. Much of the margarine (人造黄油) ,salad oil and cooking oil in daily use is now produced from soybean oil.Tofu, a representative soybean product and originally one of the main foods in the diet of Chinese priests, is considered to be one of the healthiest foods available to man.

63.Tofu came to Japan together with Buddhism because _ 。

A.Buddhist priests ate tofu rather than vegetables

B.it was a very important food in the diet of Buddhist priests

C. the religion came to Japan together with political institutions

D.the religion was the most important aspect of Chinese culture

64.How are Japanese tofu dishes different from Chinese tofu dishes?

A.They are preserved in the original taste.

B.They are served the same way throughout the year,

C.They have a better taste than Chinese tofu dishes.

D.They have a greater variety than Chinese tofu dishes.

65.The Western people become interested in tofu and other soybean products because 。

A. they have become tired of eating meat

B.meat has become too expensive to buy

C.these products are more readily available

D. eating too much animal fat is considered unhealthy

D

“Colour” and “color” , “favourite” and “favorite”“- Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a ”u“? Is it because they are lazy?

Of course not.In fact, the difference in spelling was created by Noah Webster(1758—1843) .He is a teacher who reformed English to make American identity stronger.Linguists celebrated his 250th birthday on October 16,2008.After the Revolutionary War(1775—1783) , Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British versions. He dropped the British ”u“ in some words. And he changed ”centre“ into ”center“ for children to learn English by spelling words more like they sounded.#p#分页标题#e#

Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining(定义) preposterous (unreasonable) , he wrote: ”A Republican government in the hands of females is preposterous.“

Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000 -word dictionary in 1828 with his American - style spellings. He also added local words. His dictionary was widely used in schools.Linguists believed it helped a new nation achieve unity and cultural independence at a time when most were focused on political freedom.

”He was the shaper of our language and the shaper of American identity,“ said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a biography about Webster.”He at last got us united through our language.

66.According to the passage, when he worked on his dictionary, Noah Webster did all of the following EXCEPT ____.

A.dropping “u” in all the British words

B.changing “centre” into “center”

C.adding local words

D.voicing his opinion

67.When did Noah Webster probably begin his project of the dictionary?

A.In 1758. B.In 1783. C.In 1800. D.In 1828.

68.Why did Noah Webster create these differences in his dictionary?

A.Because he wanted to make English simple and easy.

B.Because he wanted American English to have its own characteristics.

C.Because he wanted to achieve political freedom.

D.Because he wanted to show that the USA is stronger than the UK.

69.Which of the following words can best describe Noah Webster‘ s work?

A.Interesting B.Boring C.Unfinished D.Meaningful

What is a big dream? 71 Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow.

The Self

Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self - talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It‘ s there for protecting and should be listened to. 72 Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true.

73

Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won‘t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind.#p#分页标题#e#

The World

If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 74 In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world.Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.

The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 75

A.Family and Friends

B.How Big Dreams Die
